Massachusetts-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Geoff Bartley’s Mercy for the Dispossessed was the top album of the month on folk radio, according to charts compiled by Richard Gillmann from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio. Two of the album’s tracks — “Long Way Down to Harlan” and “I’ve Endured” — were reportedly among the the five most-played songs on folk radio during August 2012.

Released in July, Bartley’s tenth recording is a 12-song collection of pre-war and contemporary blues, primitive jazz, and string-band music from the southern mountains. Bartley has been described as a brilliant songwriter and wonderful guitarist in The Boston Globe and hailed by Dirty Linen as the spiritual godfather of the Boston area folk scene that he actively supports as host of the Cantab Lounge Open Mic in Cambridge, MA’s Central Square. His songs have been covered by others, and he has backed veteran folk artist Tom Paxton. Bartley also is a recipient of the Boston Area Coffeehouse Association’s Jerry Christen Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award.

The August 2012 charts are based on 12,786 airplays from 144 different DJs. The number of spins (airplays) is shown in parentheses.
