Blair Larsen

After 14 years of hosting “Fresh Folk” on Utah Public Radio, Blair Larsen is calling it quits. Her last show – featuring new releases from acoustic-based artists engaged in folk, blues, bluegrass and Celtic music – will be broadcast on Saturday, July 19 at 8 p.m. MST.

“I just don’t have the time I used to have,” Larsen wrote in a June 27 post to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio. “It’s been a great run, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed discovering and sharing new artists, but it’s time for me to move on.”

Larsen’s interest and involvement in the folk music community predates her tenure as a folk DJ. A Virginia native who has called Logan home for some 20 years, she also has produced local music events. Larsen earned degrees in environmental science, earth science education and geology and has attempted to indulge both sides of her brain each day

Recent “Fresh Folk” programs have featured tracks from new albums by Lucy Billings, Joe Crookston, Carrie Elkin and Danny Schmidt, and Bernice Lewis, among others. Without a replacement host, the show – which emanates form the studios of KUSU-FM in Logan, Utah – is simply ending

Although “Fresh Folk” is ending its run, Utah Public Radio listeners will still be able to enjoy Mike Flynn’s syndicated radio program, “Folk Sampler,” as well as “Bluegrass Breakdown” and “The Thistle & Shamrock” from Scotland.
