American bands and ensembles comprised of three to five members are invited to apply to participate in the American Music Abroad program for the 2015-2016 touring season. An international exchange program designed to communicate America’s rich musical contributions and diverse culture to the global music scene through musical performances and educational outreach, American Music Abroad is a partnership between American Voices and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Ensembles from various American musical genres will be chosen based on artistic quality and a demonstrated commitment to educational and cultural engagement. Each year, some 10 ensembles are selected to embark on a month-long, multi-country tour during which they engage with international audiences through high-profile public concerts, intensive collaborations and interactive performances with local musicians lectures and demonstrations, workshops, jam sessions, and media interviews.

Previous participating ensembles – including The Amigos, Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards, Della Mae, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer with Barbara Lamb, Henhouse Prowlers, Matuto and Tumbling Bones, among others – have traveled to more than 75 countries whose citizens had little or no access to live American music. The month-long tours operate under the official auspices of the U.S. government with the U.S. Department of State providing funding for international travel, hotels and an allowance for meals and incidental expenses. Each participating musician also receives a tour honorarium of $200 per day spent on the road. Prior to touring, each selected ensemble will participate in an American Music Abroad @ Home program in Washington, DC.
