Alice Gerrard's Bittersweet, the first recording of all original songs by one of the pioneering women in bluegrass and old-time music, was the most-played album on folk radio during August 2013, according to charts compiled by Richard Gillmann from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio. Closely following it were the debut album by The Barn Birds (the singer-songwriter duo of Jonathan Byrd and Chris Kokesh)and Si Kahn's Bristol Bay, which was July's most-played album. One of the richest fisheries remaining in the world, Alaska's Bristol Bay is endangered by plans for the open-pit Pebble Mine. Jewels and Harmony, a collection of 15 hand-picked and beautifully interpreted contemporary folk songs by New Jersey-based folksinger and jewelry designer Mara Levine, was the most-played album on folk radio in January. Her second release includes a moving arrangement of Michael Smith's classic "The Dutchman," as sung by Levine and Si Kahn, and "When I Sing With You," a song that Kahn wrote for the album that features Gathering Time and Joe Jencks on harmony vocals. Hundreds of folk & bluegrass music lovers are expected to gather at the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps (200 Congers Road, New City, New York) on Sunday afternoon, August 26, 2012 for the third annual picnic, singing party, and jam hosted by the Borderline Folk Music Club of Rockland County and co-sponsored by AcousticMusicScene.com. The free event, for which people are expected to bring a cold potluck dish for six, is set for 12-6 p.m. in the outdoor grassy area adjacent to the parking lot.
