The growing popularity of Acoustic Long Island, Dave and Rob Dircks’ wonderful weekly coffeehouse series in St. James, that also ranks as the top acoustic music podcast on iTunes, has prompted the brothers to expand their live venue to hold about 100 people comfortably.
After percolating for more than 18 months at Cool Beanz, a cozy coffeehouse in a strip shopping center, the series has moved just a bit further down Route 25A to a larger space within the historic Deepwells Mansion (circa 1845), a Suffolk County-owned treasure situated just west of Moriches Road.
“With two commanding fireplaces, soft light from turn-of-the-century chandeliers, and the most awesome rocking-chair porch you’ve ever seen, it’s like stepping into the past, while listening to the best of today’s acoustic music scene,” says Dave Dircks of the mansion that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. “The overall feel will be more like a house concert, real homey and intimate.”
Dircks believes the cozy living room ambience will “really put both performers and the audience at ease and help everyone to put their guard down and enjoy the evening.” He notes that while the series has moved, it maintains its 8-10 p.m. Wednesday night time slot and “the same great local
While referring to Cool Beanz as “very special” and hailing its proprieters for “allowing us to invade their café every Wednesday for over a year and a half of this amazing journey,” Dircks said Acoustic Long Island had simply outgrown it.
Folks were practically streaming out the door last December when the featured act was Red Molly. The rootsy Americana trio, which has been mesmerizing audiences with beautiful three-part harmonies and solid musicianship, is also slated to perform at the 2nd Annual Acoustic Long Island Summer Festival, Friday evening, June 29, on Deepwells Farm’s expansive grounds. Also on the festival bill are Little Toby Walker, Andy Mac, and Martha Trachtenberg & Tom Griffith, among others.
