“Bound For Glory: A Musical Tribute to Woody Guthrie” will be re-broadcast by WFDU-FM (89.1 FM – Teaneck, N.J. and online at www.wfdu.fm) on Sunday, July 22, at 3 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time), in recognition of the 95th anniversary of the birth of this folk icon.

Recorded during last November’s Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) Conference in Monticello, N.Y., “Bound For Glory” is a wonderful two-hour remake of an historic revue that was originally presented in New York City in 1956.  Recognized as a milestone moment of the folk revival, its script was put together by Millard Lampell, a member of the Almanac Singers, and featured Guthrie’s musings and music.  In essence, the revue was a look at America during the first half of the 20th century as Guthrie saw it.

A musical highlight of last fall’s gathering in The Catskills, “Bound For Glory” features a talented group of performers assembled by Ron Olesko, longtime host of WFDU’s “Traditions” program, which airs on Sunday afternoons.  Tom Chapin narrates as the voice of Woody Guthrie, along with Robert Cohen of the Philadelphia Folksong Society,  while the artists performing his music include Danny Bakan, Dirty Stayout Skifflers with Rick Nestler, Greg Greenway, Hope Machine (featuring Fred Gillen, Jr., Steve Kirkman and Steve Chizmadia), Joe Jencks, Karen Mal, David Massengill, Rik Palieri, Laurie MacAllister and Abbie Gardner of Red Molly, Danny Schmidt, Little Toby Walker, Amy Carol Webb, Bethany Yarrow and Rufus Cappadocia.

“When I was planning this event, I was hoping that the artists would not do “cover” versions of Woody’s songs but rather make it part of their own,” Olesko wrote on his blog last November. “EVERYONE did just that.  The beauty of Woody’s words and music is that it is so accessible to all of us no matter what our age, background or tastes,” he continued.  “Woody Guthrie truly defined “folk” music as his work speaks to everyone.”

According to Olesko, there are no plans for future re-broadcasts of last year’s version of “Bound For Glory” after this airing, so be sure to tune in or log-on July 22 at 3 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time).
