WoodSongs at the Movies Set for Wednesday Nights

The Folk Music Society of Huntington (New York) joins with Clearview Cinemas and Folksinger Michael Johnathon’s WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour to present WoodSongs at the Movies at Clearview’s Babylon Cinemas (34 Main Street, west of Deer Park Avenue, in Babylon Village), on Wednesday evenings, beginning Dec. 3.  This follows an initial three-week run in Manhasset.  Live, 45-minute performances by featured local artists will precede a one-hour screening each week.  Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12.

WoodSongs (www.woodsongs.com), which began years ago in a small recording studio that could barely fit 18 people, has evolved into a multi-media celebration of grassroots music that now airs on nearly 500 radio stations worldwide, XM Satellite Radio, online, and on public television stations across the U.S.  People from all over tune in each week to hear WoodSongs, which is recorded before a live audience every Monday night at the historic Kentucky Theater in Lexington, Kentucky.  The new venture creates a concert setting for viewers who are unable to make a multi-camera taping of the show, which marked its 500th broadcast milestone on Sept. 18 with a gala evening featuring special guest Richie Havens.

During December, the Folk Music Society of Huntington will present the following artists live at the Babylon Cinemas:

Dec. 3 – The Homegrown String Band

Inspired by the rural string bands of the early 20th century, Long Island’s Jackofsky family has been performing traditonal and neo-traditional acoustic American roots music and lively originals together for more than a decade.

Dec. 10 – Phil Minissale

The finger-pickin’ good Long Island Blues Boy is now 21 and touting his new debut CD. He evoked a nice response following his tricentric showcase during the recent Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) conference.

Dec. 17 – Lucky 13

Blending the eclectic styles and voices of Marci Geller, Cathy Kreger and Susan DeVita, this new Long Island-based trio has what WFUV’s John Platt calls a “chemistry [that] is really kind of magical.”

Artists slated to appear on the big screen in December are Tim O’Brien (Dec. 3), Marie Knight (Dec. 10) and Over the Rhine (Dec. 17).
