Suzi Wollenberg, folk music coordinator and host of “Roots” on Tuesday mornings on WVUD 91.3 FM, “the voice of the University of Delaware,” died suddenly on Saturday morning, August 8. At the time of her death, Wollenberg also was serving as president of the Green Willow Folk Club in Wilmington.
Wollenberg joined the Newark, Delaware-based radio station, then broadcasting at only 10 watts, in 1977, having been informed by a friend that it was seeking a folk music DJ. “I had a long-standing affection for folk music, had done some radio in college and could fit a show into my work schedule, so I signed on to do ‘Roots’” she told a student reporter for the UDaily earlier this year, as the radio station was marking its 40th anniversary. “Roots,” which has evolved into a daily folk music program with different hosts each weekday morning from 9-11 a.m., features a mix of Celtic, country and American folk music.
The primary cause of Wollenberg’s sudden death is uncertain, but a heart arrhythmia was involved, according to her husband, John Lupton, president of the Brandywine Friends of Old Time Music, whom she married while both were working as DJs at WVUD.
