Melissa Greener is the first place winner in the Folk category in the 14th Annual USA Songwriting Competition. The nationally touring folk-rock singer-songwriter, who has called Austin home and currently resides in New York City, won for her song “Bullets to Bite.”

Greener has been compared to a young Ani DiFranco or Dar Williams by Kathy Sands-Boehmer of Marblehead, Mass.’s Me and Thee Coffeehouse, whose June 2009 interview with the artist is archived in the Features section of AcousticMusicScene.com. Although a judging committee comprised of music industry professionals evaluated songs and selected winners in 15 categories based on originality, lyrics, melody and composition, without consideration for quality of performance and production, Sands-Boehmer believes Greener’s “delivery and calm, collected, yet passionate presence on stage is something to experience.”

Greener is currently working with noted producer and musician John Jennings on her sophomore release, which is slated for release next year.
