Si Kahn Bristol Bay cdBristol Bay, the 18th release by renowned folksinger-songwriter, author, organizer and community activist Si Kahn, was the most-played album on folk radio during July 2013, according to charts compiled by Richard Gillmann from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio.

One of the richest fisheries remaining in the world, Alaska’s Bristol bay is endangered by plans for the open-pit Pebble Mine. All proceeds from the CD directly support the work of Musicians United to Protect Bristol Bay (musiciansunited.info). Si Kahn’s previous release, Courage, was the most-played album on folk radio in 2011.

Although Bristol Bay also features six of July’s most-played songs on folk radio, tied for #1 song last month were “Last Train” off The Copper Ponies’ debut EP Ring Them Bells (the most-played album on folk radio in June) and “Rust Belt Fields” from Slaid Cleaves’ new album Still Fighting The War (which currently tops the Roots Music Report Americana/roots country radio chart).

The July 2013 FOLKDJ-L charts are based on 14,746 airplays from 135 different DJs. The number of reported spins (airplays) is shown in parentheses, while label and release dates appear in brackets. They are posted, with permission, on AcousticMusicScene.com.
