Early Registration Opens for International Folk Alliance Conference

The 22nd Annual International Folk Alliance Conference is slated for next February 17-22 in Memphis, Tennessee. However, financial savings are in the offing through early registration that is now open, while forms also are available on the Folk Alliance International’s website (www.folk.org) for performing artists to apply for showcase opportunities. This month marks the 10th anniversary of the official launch of Napster, the revolutionary file-sharing network application that led to millions of people downloading music files online and prompted many music industry observers to sound the death knell for record labels long before sales figures had shown any marked decline. Getting to Know… Nels Andrews

Nels Andrews released his first album independently in 2005. But, in that short span of time, the well-traveled, Brooklyn, New York-based singer-songwriter has earned some impressive honors and accolades with his original Americana and folk-rock songs. He’s been a Grassy Hill/Kerrville New Folk Winner, an official showcase artist at this year’s International Folk Alliance Conference, and is among the 24 artists selected to perform in next month’s Emerging Artists Showcase at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. New Music Seminar Set for July 21 in New York City

Seeking to empower and inform developing artists whom he feels have been disenfranchised and disheartened by the state of the music industry and are desperate for change, Thomas Silverman, owner of Tommy Boy Entertainment, is bringing back the New Music Seminars that he co-founded nearly 30 years ago. Benefit Concert for Folk DJ Angela Page Slated for July 5

Since 1993, Angela Page has been exposing folks in New York’s Catskill Mountains region to a blend of music from the contemporary folk scene through her weekly radio show, “Folk Plus,” airing Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on hydro-powered public radio WJFF 90.5 FM. Now some of her friends within the folk music community are coming together to stage a benefit concert on July 5 to raise funds to help defray medical and legal expenses related to a chemical sensitivities illness she contracted while working as a school media specialist in a mold-infested middle school library.
