2011 Future of Music Policy Summit Set for Oct. 3-4 in Washington; Online Survey on How Artists Make $ from Music Launches Sept. 6

How can artists earn a living in today’s changing music landscape? What’s the future of mobile music? Does the future of music licensing portend a new world order or a system collapse? These are among the many questions to be addressed during the 2011 Future of Music Policy Summit at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., Monday - Tuesday, Oct.3-4. The nonprofit Future of Music Coalition also is enlisting U.S.-based professional musicians and composers across genres to participate in an online survey between Sept. 6 and Oct. 28 as part of its multifaceted Artist Revenue Streams research project. Top Albums and Songs of August 2011 (FolkDJ-L)

AcousticMusicScene.com is pleased to publish the monthly Top Albums and Songs charts compiled by Richard Gillmann of KBCS-FM in Bellevue/Seattle, Washington, from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio. In August 2011, Gillian Welch's The Harrow and the Harvest continued to top the albums chart, while a few of its tracks were among the most played songs on folk radio for the month. SONiA & disappear fear's Get Your Phil (the songs of Phil Ochs), a new release featuring the recorded vocal harmonies of sisters Sonia Rutstein and Cindy Frank for the first time in 15 years, moved into the #2 position on the albums chart and also included several of the month's top songs. NY’s Borderline Folk Club Honors Si Kahn at Annual Picnic, Aug. 28

Hundreds of folk & bluegrass music lovers are expected to gather at the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps (200 Congers Road, New City, New York) on Sunday afternoon, August 28, for the third annual picnic, singing party, and jam hosted by the Borderline Folk Music Club of Rockland County. The free event, for which people are expected to bring a cold potluck dish for six, is set for 12-6 p.m. in the outdoor grassy area adjacent to the parking lot. Philadelphia Folk Festival Celebrates Its Golden Anniversary

avid Amram, Roy Book Binder, David Bromberg, Arlo Guthrie, Levon Helm, Jorma Kaukonen, Tom Paxton and Tom Rush are among the music luminaries slated to perform during the 50th annual Philadelphia Folk Festival, August 18-21, 2011. Joining them at the Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford Township, near Schwenksville, Pennsylvania, for the longest continually running festival of its kind will be a number of up-and-coming touring artists like Dan Bern, Justin Townes Earle, David Wax Museum, the Canadian female duos Dala and Madison Violet, and Philly’s own Hoots and Hellmouth, as well as many other locally-based artists. In July 2011, Gillian Welch had both the top album and top two songs for the month, while the debut album by Brother Sun (the trio comprised of Greg Greenway, Joe Jencks and Pat Wictor) was #2 on the the albums chart. ‘Legends of Folk: The Village Scene’ Airs on PBS Stations in August

Well-known figures in folk music perform their best-loved songs in the new PBS documentary, Legends of Folk: the Village Scene. Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary fame hosts the special celebrating the folk era in New York City’s Greenwich Village – the epicenter of the folk, folk-rock and singer-songwriter movements during the 1960s.
