Board of Advisors Named for Newport Folk Festival
The Newport Folk Festival, which, earlier this year, returned to its original roots as a nonprofit event, has taken another step that organizers say will help ensure that it “remains a significant, viable, and influential institution for years to come.” To further advance the dialogue with both established and emerging artists, the Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc. announced the creation of its Newport Folk Festival Board of Advisors. Named to the panel were Gillian Welch, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, and Ben Knox Miller of The Low Anthem.

Roots Music Report Folk & Roots Country Radio Charts, 09-16-11
Albums by The Civil Wars, Paul Simon, Eliza Gilkyson, David Bromberg and Abigail Washburn continue to retain the top five positions in the Roots Music Report Folk Radio Chart this week, although the order has changed. Meanwhile, albums by Gillian Welch and Kasey Chambers remain #1 and #2 on RMR's Roots Country chart, followed by releases from Catherine MacLellan, Blackie & the Rodeo Kings and EmmyLou Harris.

Kasey Chambers Wins 2010 International Songwriting Competition
Australian singer-songwriter Kasey Chambers was named the grand prize winner in the 2010 International Songwriting Competition (ISC). Chambers was recognized for her song “Beautiful Mess,” which was entered into the folk/singer-songwriter category.

Jim Lauderdale Engages in Live Facebook Chat on Songwriting, 2/1
Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale, who also serves as volunteer chairperson for MerleFest’s Chris Austin Songwriting Contest, will engage in a live chat on Facebook on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. EST. Fans and aspiring songwriters can join the chat and pose questions to Lauderdale about the contest and songwriting in general by visiting the official page of the contest at the social media site.

Kate McGarrigle, Canadian Folksinger-Songwriter, 1946-2010
Canadian folksinger-songwriter Kate McGarrigle, who performed with her sister Anna as the McGarrigle Sisters for three decades, has died at age 63. Besides being an acclaimed and award-winning artist in her own right, McGarrigle was the mother of artists Rufus and Martha Wainwright through her previous marriage to singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III. McGarrigle, who had been battling a rare form of cancer, died at her Montreal home on Monday night, January 18.
