FAI Folk Radio Charts – July 2024
The Magnolia Janes had the top album (The Light Years) on folk radio during July 2024, edging out Beppe Gambetta’s Terra Madre, while Gambetta’s “Sit and Pick With You” was the most-played song for a second time – edging out songs by The Magnolia Janes and Beth DeSombre. Happy Traum, who died on July 17, was the month’s most-played artist. So say charts compiled by Folk Alliance International based on radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in folk-based music on the radio.

John Cohen, Founding Member of the New Lost City Ramblers, 1932-2019
John Cohen, a founding member of the influential folk group the New Lost City Ramblers, died on Sept. 16, 2019. Cohen, 87, also was a musicologist, photographer and filmmaker.

Smithsonian Folkways Acquires Arhoolie Records
Arhoolie Records -- known for “down home” blues, folk, jazz, country, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, Mexican American, and world music -- has been acquired by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the nonprofit label of the Smithsonian Institution -- the national museum of The United States.

Hazel Dickens, a Pioneering Woman in Bluegrass Music, 1935-2011
Hazel Dickens, a trailblazer for women in bluegrass music, who captivated audiences with her high, lonesome vocal style and was widely recognized for her contributions to music and for championing the cause of coal miners and working people, died on April 22 . She was 75.

NEA Honors Mike Seeger with Bess Lomax Hawes Award
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) last week named Mike Seeger as the recipient of its 2009 Bess Lomax Hawes Award. The award is presented annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the preservation and awareness of our cultural heritage.
