Top Albums and Songs of 2011 (FOLKDJ-L)
Alison Krauss and Union Station's Paper Airplane is the top album of the year and "Scarlet Town" from Gillian Welch's The Harrow and the Harvest, the #2 album, is the top song of 2011, based on radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio.

Warren Hellman, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Founder, 1934-2011
Warren Hellman, a San Francisco-based financier and philanthropist who founded and funded the city’s nationally renowned Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival and toured earlier this year with his band, The Wronglers, died Dec. 18 from complications of leukemia. He was 77.

2012 Grammy Nominees Named in American Roots Music Field
Nominees in more than 75 categories have been named for the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, to be broadcast live from Los Angeles, California on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, on CBS television stations.

Top Folk Albums and Songs of September 2011 (FOLKDJ-L)
AcousticMusicScene.com is pleased to publish the monthly Top Albums and Songs charts compiled by Richard Gillmann of KBCS-FM in Bellevue/Seattle, Washington, from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio. In September 2011, Pharis and Jason Romero's A Passing Glimpse, the British Columbia-based duo's debut collection of old-time music, topped the albums chart. Lucy Kaplansky's "Land of the Living," a post-9-11 New York song, received more reported folk radio airplay than any other song during the month.

Board of Advisors Named for Newport Folk Festival
The Newport Folk Festival, which, earlier this year, returned to its original roots as a nonprofit event, has taken another step that organizers say will help ensure that it “remains a significant, viable, and influential institution for years to come.” To further advance the dialogue with both established and emerging artists, the Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc. announced the creation of its Newport Folk Festival Board of Advisors. Named to the panel were Gillian Welch, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, and Ben Knox Miller of The Low Anthem.
