Albums by The Civil Wars, Paul Simon, Eliza Gilkyson, David Bromberg and Abigail Washburn continue to retain the top five positions in the Roots Music Report Folk Radio Chart this week, although the order has changed. Meanwhile, albums by Gillian Welch and Kasey Chambers remain #1 and #2 on RMR's Roots Country chart, followed by releases from Catherine MacLellan, Blackie & the Rodeo Kings and EmmyLou Harris.

The Civil Wars' debut album Barton Hollow continues to top the Roots Music Report Folk Radio Chart this week, while Gillian Welch's The Harrow & the Harvest (the most played album during August on the FOLKDJ-Listserv), is #1 on RMR's Roots Country chart.

AcousticMusicScene.com is pleased to publish the monthly Top Albums and Songs charts compiled by Richard Gillmann of KBCS-FM in Bellevue/Seattle, Washington, from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio. In August 2011, Gillian Welch's The Harrow and the Harvest continued to top the albums chart, while a few of its tracks were among the most played songs on folk radio for the month. SONiA & disappear fear's Get Your Phil (the songs of Phil Ochs), a new release featuring the recorded vocal harmonies of sisters Sonia Rutstein and Cindy Frank for the first time in 15 years, moved into the #2 position on the albums chart...

Beginning this month, AcousticMusicScene.com is pleased to publish the monthly Top Albums and Songs charts compiled by Richard Gillmann of KBCS-FM in Bellevue/Seattle, Washington, from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio. In July 2011, Gillian Welch had both the top album and top two songs for the month, while the debut album by Brother Sun (the trio comprised of Greg Greenway, Joe Jencks and Pat Wictor) was #2 on the the albums chart. Scotland's Battlefield Band had both the #3 album and song for July.

Chris Austin Songwriting Contest Accepting Entries Until Feb. 18
Submissions are now being sought for the 19th annual Chris Austin Songwriting Contest, hosted by MerleFest, one of America’s most popular Americana music festivals. Open to aspiring songwriters who derive no more than 50% of their income from songwriting or music publishing, the contest deadline is February 18, 2011.

Finalists have been named in the 18th annual Chris Austin Songwriting Contest, hosted by MerleFest 2010, the popular roots-oriented music festival that takes place April 29-May 2 on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

George Wein Secures Permit for Folk Festival 50 in Newport
Fifty years after launching the first Newport Folk Festival, George Wein, 83, a pioneer among producers of outdoor music festivals, will return to steer another one this summer at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island. Following months of negotiations, the Newport City Council last night approved a permit for what will be called George Wein’s Folk Festival 50. Slated for July 31-August 2, the event will feature several notable established folk artists who performed during the festival’s early years, as well as some more contemporary singer-songwriters and musicians. Tickets go on sale May 6 at www.folkfestival50.com.
