FAI Folk Radio Charts – September 2024
Bluegrass Sings Paxton (Various Artists) was the top album, while Tom Paxton’s classic “I Can’t Help But Wonder (Where I’m Bound)" -- featuring the folk icon and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award-winner himself and the noted female bluegrass ensemble Della Mae -- was the month’s most-played song on folk radio during September 2024. House of Hamill and Kate McDonnell were the month’s most-played artists. So say charts compiled by Folk Alliance International based on radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in folk-based music on the radio.

Beth Snapp Wins 2021 Songwriter Serenade
Beth Snapp, a folk-pop singer-songwriter who hails from northeast Tennessee, took top honors during the 14th annual Songwriter Serenade in Schulenberg, Texas on October 2, 2021. She was chosen from among 15 semifinalists in the songwriting competition by a panel of judges who evaluated them based on lyrics (imagery, story, creativity, and originality), melody (structure, phrasing, and rhythm), and performing ability (vocals, musicianship), as well as stage presence/audience rapport.

Kerrville Folk Festival Virtual Celebration Set; 24 New Folk Finalists Named
Although the annual 18-day-long Kerrville Folk Festival won’t be taking place in late May-June 2021 on the Quiet Valley Ranch in the Texas Hill Country due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a KFF Virtual Celebration is set to stream live from there on Saturday, May 29. Meanwhile, 24 songwriters have been named as finalists in the 2021 Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition for Emerging Songwriters and will showcase their talents online during Finalist Concerts beginning at 7 p.m. CT, May 22 and 23.

Performing Songwriter Contests Open for Entries
Entries are now being sought in three performing songwriter competitions: the Al Johnson Performing Songwriter Contest, Songwriter Serenade, and Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition. Although these contests take place in Texas, they are not solely for songwriters based in the state.

Winners Named in Kerrville New Folk and Songwriter Serenade Competitions
Six singer-songwriters have been named as winners in the 2019 Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition for Emerging Songwriters. They were chosen by a panel of judges from among 32 finalists who performed two songs each during the New Folk Concerts on May 25 and 26 as part of the Kerrville Folk Festival, an 18-day event at the Quiet Valley Ranch in the Texas Hill Country. Winners were also named in the Songwriter Serenade that took place elsewhere in Texas earlier this month.

2019 Kerrville New Folk Competition Opens
Entries are now being accepted for the 2019 Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition for Emerging Songwriters, to be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 25 and 26, 2019, during the first weekend of the 48th Annual Kerrville Folk Festival in the Texas Hill Country near Austin and San Antonio. The first 800 entries postmarked or submitted online by February 28 will be judged, and 32 finalists will be named in April.

2016 Kerrville New Folk Winners Named
Six singer-songwriters were named as winners in the 2016 Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition for Emerging Songwriters. They were selected by a panel of judges from among 32 finalists who performed two songs each during the New Folk Concerts on May 28 and 29 as part of the Kerrville Folk Festival, an 18-day event at the Quiet Valley Ranch in the Texas Hill Country. The six will perform during a New Folk Winners concert at the festival on Sunday afternoon, June 5, and will receive cash honorariums and other prizes.

Kerrville New Folk Winners Perform Live Online, Nov. 4
The 2014 Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Winners will perform live online on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. CST. The special Blue Rock Sessions Live broadcast will emanate from Billy and Dodee Crockett’s Blue Rock Studios near Wimberley, Texas. Tickets for the high-quality studio production and HD video webcast use the “pay what you want” model with fan tipping.

Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Finalists Named
Thirty-two songwriters have been named as finalists in the 2014 Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition for Emerging Songwriters. Chosen from among hundreds of submissions from throughout the U.S. and Canada, the finalists will perform the two songs they submitted during the New Folk Concerts slated for Saturday and Sunday afternoons, May 24 and 25, as part of the Kerrville Folk Festival.
