Smithsonian Folkways Acquires Arhoolie Records
Arhoolie Records -- known for “down home” blues, folk, jazz, country, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, Mexican American, and world music -- has been acquired by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the nonprofit label of the Smithsonian Institution -- the national museum of The United States.

2015 JUNO Award Winners Named
Catherine MacLellan’s The Raven’s Sun and The Bros. Landreth’s Let It Lie were named Roots and Traditional Album of the Year – Solo and Group, respectively, in the 2015 JUNO Awards, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys. They were recognized by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (CARAS) prior to televised ceremonies from the FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton, Ontario on March 15.

FreshGrass Returns to MASS MoCA, Sept. 19-21
FreshGrass, a family-friendly bluegrass and roots music festival in the Berkshires of northwestern Massachusetts, is slated for Sept. 19-21, 2014. Nominees Named for 56th Annual Grammy Awards
Nominees in more than 80 categories have been named for the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, to be presented at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014. Of particular interest to readers of AcousticMusicScene.com are the nominees in the American Roots Music Field. Among them, Sarah Jarosz and Steve Martin & Edie Brickell received nods in two categories.

Sid Selvidge,1943-2013
Sid Selvidge, a Memphis-based singer, guitarist and cultural treasure, and an ardent champion of blues and roots music, who helped launch and served as executive producer of the internationally syndicated Beale Street Caravan radio program, died May 2 at Methodist University Hospital. He was 69 and had been battling cancer.

Old Settler’s Music Festival Set for April 18-21
The roots, bluegrass and Americana-oriented Old Settler’s Music Festival returns to the Salt Lick BBQ Pavilion and Camp Ben McCulloch in Driftwood, Texas, April 18-21. Now in its 26th year, the festival is not as well-known outside the state as some others in the Austin area – and that’s part of its allure. Old Settler’s Music Festival also takes place during what’s usually the height of Texas Hill Country’s bluebonnet and wildflower season.

Bruce Cockburn, Dave Gunning and Quebecois Trio Genticorum Among Top Canadian Folk Music Award Winners for 2011
The 2011 Canadian Folk Music Awards were presented in Toronto, Ontario on Sunday evening, Dec. 4. Winners were named in 19 categories and a new Unsung Hero award was presented during a gala event at the Isabel Bader Theatre. Bruce Cockburn, Dave Gunning and Quebecois trio Genticorum each won two awards.
