Nearly 200 people are expected to converge on the Montreat Conference Center in Montreat, North Carolina, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Asheville, May 16-19, 2013, for the sixth annual Southeast Regional Folk Alliance (SERFA) Conference -- an extended weekend of contemporary and traditional folk music, networking, and learning opportunities. Official Showcase Artists Selected for FARM Gathering in Illinois
The following artists have been selected (from among more than 100 applicants) to perform official showcases during the 2011 Folk Alliance Region Midwest (FARM) Gathering, slated for Sept. 22-25 at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites of Bolingbrook, Illinois, located less than an hour from Chicago: John Batdorf, Jen Cass, RJ Cowdery, Harpeth Rising, Bill & Kate Isles, Lake Folk, Sarah McQuaid, Carol Montag, Louise Mosrie, Zoe Mulford, Sally Spring, Spuyten Duyvil, Dennis Stroughmatt et L’Esprit Creole and Twangtown Paramours.

Albums by Tim O'Brien, Red Horse (the new trio comprised of Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky), and Crooked Still remain in the top three spots on the Roots Music Report Folk Radio Chart this week. Q & A with John Platt of WFUV’s ‘Sunday Breakfast’
In a popular music landscape where today’s talented singer-songwriters are often ignored, it’s a little miracle to listen to radio stations — usually small, publicly-run or independent — that promote songwriters who might fall between the cracks. Among the many wonderful DJs out there supporting independent singer-songwriters in markets across the U.S., one of the most well-known and well-listened to is John Platt, host of “Sunday Breakfast” on New York’s WFUV. Sharon Goldman recently elicited his thoughts about the singer-songwriter scene for her blog, Songwriting Scene. Her Q & A interview with him is reprinted here with permission.
