FAI Folk Radio Charts – July 2024

The Magnolia Janes had the top album (The Light Years) on folk radio during July 2024, edging out Beppe Gambetta’s Terra Madre, while Gambetta’s “Sit and Pick With You” was the most-played song for a second time – edging out songs by The Magnolia Janes and Beth DeSombre. Happy Traum, who died on July 17, was the month’s most-played artist. So say charts compiled by Folk Alliance International based on radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in folk-based music on the radio. Revered Folk DJ Gene Shay Retires

Gene Shay, who has brought folk music to radio listeners in Philadelphia and beyond for more than 50 years, signs off as host of The Folk Show on WXPN 88.5 FM on Sunday, February 1. His last show airs live from 3-6 p.m. EST (with a rebroadcast at 8 p.m. EST) and streams online at xpn.org. Shay will be feted one month later during a March 1 gala musical celebration produced by his friends at Sing Out! and featuring performances by artists who have appeared on his show. Irwin Silber, Sing Out! Co-Founder and Longtime Editor, 1925-2010

Irwin Silber, a longtime editor of Sing Out!, who co-founded the folk music magazine with Pete Seeger, musicologist Alan Lomax, and others in 1950, died on Sept. 8 in Oakland, California. He was 84 and had suffered with Alzheimer’s disease. [To read the entire article, click on the headline.]

Sandy Paton, Folksinger and Founder of Folk-Legacy, 1928-2009

Sandy Paton, a traditional folksinger, folklorist and co-founder of Folk-Legacy, has died at the age of 80. Paton, who launched the independent label based in Sharon, Connecticut with his wife Caroline and the late Lee Haggerty in 1961, passed away on July 26.
