Music festivals abound in New York State in late June. Q & A with Susan Werner
Susan Werner has never been one to adhere to just one musical style. A gifted singer-songwriter, who accompanies herself on both guitar and piano, she is known for her musical versatility and for her witty repartee during live performances. The Iowa native, who now calls Chicago home, has been delighting concert and festival audiences for two decades. Kathy Sands-Boehmer recently spoke with the classically-trained artist about her latest CD, Hayseed, and more.

AcousticMusicScene.com Hosts Late-Night Music at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival
AcousticMusicScene.com will host a series of late-night song swaps, mini-showcases and open song circles during the 25th annual Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, August 1-4, in partnership with Pirate Camp, which was informally launched by Stuart Kabak and the late Jack Hardy a decade ago to provide a warm and welcoming haven for sharing music, food and camaraderie.

Quick Q & A with Garnet Rogers
Canadian singer-songwriter Garnet Rogers has been hailed by the Boston Globe as “a brilliant songwriter,” “a charismatic performer and singer,” and “one of the major talents of our time.” The venerable folk music publication Sing Out! noted that he “may be one of the greatest male interpreters and vocalists performing in the contemporary folk scene.” Kathy Sands-Boehmer posed some questions to him recently.

Ann Arbor Folk Festival Slated for Jan. 28 & 29, 2011
Tickets go on sale to the general public on Dec. 1 for the 34th Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Slated for Friday and Saturday nights, Jan. 28 and 29, 2011, beginning at 6:30 p.m., the festival is a fundraiser for The Ark, Ann Arbor’s home for acoustic music. Susan Werner, a witty singer-songwriter whose music transcends genres, emcees the event that features a number of traditional and contemporary artists in folk and roots music circles.

Kathy Mattea Headlines Connecticut Folk Festival & Green Expo
Grammy Award-winning folk/country singer Kathy Mattea will be the Saturday night headliner during the Connecticut Folk Festival and Green Expo that’s set for Sept. 10-12 in New Haven’s Edgerton Park.

Werner & Gilbert Headline Huntington (NY) Folk Festival, Aug. 7
AcousticMusicScene.com will have a major presence at the Fifth Annual Huntington Folk Festival that takes place on Saturday, August 7, in Huntington, New York. Singer-Songwriters Susan Werner and Vance Gilbert co-headline the free event that extends from 1 p.m. into the late evening at Heckscher Park, Main Street (Route 25A) and Prime Avenue.
Prior to the 8:30 p.m. concert by Werner and Gilbert on the Chapin Rainbow Stage, unplugged showcases and song swaps will take place from 1-6:30 p.m. under or near canopy tents hosted by AcousticMusicScene.com and Richard Cuccaro’s monthly listings guide Acoustic Live! in NYC & Beyond. The Green Palate Open Mic also will have a presence.

Q & A with John Platt of WFUV’s ‘Sunday Breakfast’
In a popular music landscape where today’s talented singer-songwriters are often ignored, it’s a little miracle to listen to radio stations — usually small, publicly-run or independent — that promote songwriters who might fall between the cracks. Among the many wonderful DJs out there supporting independent singer-songwriters in markets across the U.S., one of the most well-known and well-listened to is John Platt, host of “Sunday Breakfast” on New York’s WFUV. Sharon Goldman recently elicited his thoughts about the singer-songwriter scene for her blog, Songwriting Scene. Her Q & A interview with him is reprinted here with permission.
