Willie Nelson was the most-played artist and had the top album (Last leaf on the Tree) on folk radio during November 2024, while the album’s title track tied with Joe Crookston’s “Oh Mercy, Where Are You Now? “ as the month’s most-played song. So say charts compiled by Folk Alliance International based on radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in folk-based music on the radio.

GRAMMY Awards Nominees Named in American Roots Music Field
Nominees have been named for the 66th annual GRAMMY Awards to be presented by the Recording Academy on Sunday, February 4, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. Brandy Clark, Jason Isbell and Allison Russell lead the nominees in the American Roots Music Field with three nominations each.

GRAMMY and International Folk Music Awards Presented
Winners in the 65th Grammy Awards’ American Roots Music Field were recognized during a ceremony that took place prior to The Recording Academy’s televised awards show from Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 5, 2023. Folk Alliance International presented its annual International Folk Music Awards in Kansas City, Missouri on February 1.

Top Albums and Songs – May 2017 (FOLKDJ-L)
Illinois-based singer-songwriter Joe Jencks had the most-played album (Poets, Philosophers, Workers and Wanderers) on folk radio during May 2017 while Willie Nelson’s “Still Not Dead” was the month’s #1 song. Jencks also was the month’s most-played artist, while Nelson was #2. So say charts compiled by Richard Gillmann from radio playlists submitted to FOLKDJ-L, an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in all folk-based music on the radio.

Steven Fromholz, Texas Singer-Songwriter, 1945-2014
Steven Fromholz, a well-respected Texas singer-songwriter, engaging and witty performer, author, actor, humorist, “singing cowboy,” acclaimed whitewater rafting guide, and one-time poet laureate of the Lone Star State, died Jan. 19 following a hunting accident. He was 68.

Roots Music Report Folk and Roots Country Radio Charts, 07-20-12
Fittingly, as we celebrate his birthday, Woody at 100: The Woody Guthrie Centennial Collection (Smithsonian Folkways), a 150-page large-format book with three CDs containing 57 tracks (including 21 previously unreleased performances), topped the Roots Music Report folk radio chart this week. Willie Nelson's Heroes continued in the #1 position on the roots country chart.
