Strains of “Caledonia” will fill the air in Grass Valley, California, Oct. 3-4, where leading Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean is among the headliners in the 13th Annual Celtic Festival & Marketplace. Produced by and benefiting KVMR Community Radio (89.5 and 101.5FM in Tahoe/Truckee and streaming at www.kvmr.org), the festival takes place at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Joining the expressive singer, gifted songwriter and talented guitarist in the festival lineup will be Northwest Ireland’s Dervish, Celtic rockers Enter the Haggis from Canada and The Elders from Kansas City, fine fiddler Lissa Schneckenburger, flutist Brian Finnegan (formerly of Flook) and Grammy Award-winning guitarist William Coulter. A number of regional musicians and Irish and Scottish step dancers also will play their parts in providing continuous entertainment during the weekend.

More than 70 vendors will set up shop in the festival marketplace. Brief points and places in time will be re-created in several encampments of “Guilds.” There will be Animals of Celtic Lands. Harvest Home Revelers will lead a wandering procession through the Celtic Village. Visitors can test their strength against Scottish athletes in throwing stones and tug-of-war. New interactive workshops will be offered in traditional Irish step, Ceidligh, Contra and Cape Breton dancing; as well as harp-playing basics. Experienced Celtic musicians will lead sessions open to beginners and advanced players alike. And children can enjoy Celtic arts and crafts, story telling, and playing on a straw bale jungle gym.

Daily admission for adults in $35 in advance and $40 at the gate, while two-day tickets are $55 and $60, respectively. Tickets are sharply discounted for youth (ages 6-16) and free for children under 6. Discounts also are available for KVMR members. On-site camping is available for an additional fee.
