Top Folk Albums and Songs of October 2011 (FOLKDJ-L)

In October 2011, Light in the Sky, the new release by female Americana-roots trio Red Molly, topped the albums chart and also sported three of the top 10 songs. The #1 most played song of the month on folk radio was a rendition of Paul Simon's "Leaves That Are Green" by folksinger and jewelry designer Mara Levine with folk harmony trio Gathering Time from her forthcoming album, Jewels and Harmony. Arthur Alligood Wins 2011 Mountain Stage NewSong Contest

Arthur Alligood has been named the grand prize winner in the 10th annual Mountain Stage NewSong Contest.Alligood, who hails from the small town of White House, TN, near Nashville, was chosen from among more than 2,000 entrants and selected from among 12 finalists. The international finals for the noted performing songwriter contest -- presented by the live performance radio show and produced by the independent music organization NewSong Music -- took place last Thursday evening, Oct. 20, at the World Financial Center’s Wintergarden in New York City. Clearwater Honors George Wein with Power of Song Award

Music festival impresario George Wein, founder of the Newport Folk Festival, among others, will receive the first Power of Song Award during an Oct. 21 benefit concert in New York City.
