The third annual DelFest at the Allegany County Fairgrounds in Cumberland, Maryland does not take place until next Memorial Day Weekend. More than a dozen folk DJs from the northeast and beyond will introduce each other and other early arrivers to the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) Conference to a number of artists who may be new to them during the annual folk DJ showcase on Thursday night, November 12, from 8:30 p.m. to midnight, at the Hudson Valley Resort & Conference Center in Kerhonkson, New York. The popular event, which precedes the formal start of the conference on Friday, has been renamed the Suzi Wollenberg DJ Showcase this year in honor of the former folk music coordinator and host of “Roots” on Tuesday mornings on WVUD 91.3 FM, ”the voice of the University of Delaware,” who died suddenly on August 8. At the time of her death, Wollenberg was serving as president of the Green Willow Folk Club in Wilmington, DE and was active in helping to organize the Folk DJ Showcase. Hundreds of performers, presenters, booking agents, radio programmers and others engaged in performing and promoting folk and acoustic music in the West – from Anchorage, Alaska to Phoenix, Arizona – are expected to converge on the Hyatt Regency in Irvine, California, November 6-8. Joan Baez is the focus of an American Masters series documentary that begins airing on PBS television stations across the country on October 14 at 8 p.m. (ET). Entitled “Joan Baez: How Sweet the Sound,” the documentary chronicles the private life and public career of the living folk legend who made her debut appearance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1959 and returned to that stage this past August as part of her worldwide tour celebrating 50 years as a recording artist and performer. Liz Longley, Grace Pettis, BettySoo, David Via and Reed Waddle were named as winners of the 2009 Mountain Stage NewSong Contest, presented by Folk Alliance International. The contest’s international finals took place on Saturday, October 10, at the Cultural Center in Charleston, West Virginia -- home to the internationally broadcast “Mountain Stage” radio and TV show that has showcased more than 2000 artists since its inception in 1983.
