Plant and Krauss Dominate 51st Annual Grammy Awards
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss were the top winners in the 51st Annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 8. The duo’s Rounder release, Raising Sand, produced by T Bone Burnett, was named Album of the Year and Best Contemporary Folk/Americana album. Plant and Krauss also captured awards for Record of the Year (“Please Read the Letter”), Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals (“Rich Woman”) and Best Country Collaboration with Vocals (“Killing The Blues”).

Memorial Celebration for Odetta Set for Feb. 24 in New York
Artists, friends and family of Odetta, a singer of folk, blues, jazz and spirituals, whose powerful, deep voice helped spark the flames of social justice and freedom during the height of the civil rights movement, will celebrate her life and career in words and song on Feb. 24 at New York’s Riverside Church.

Boston Bluegrass Union Presents Awards, Festival in February
A number of individuals who have made substantial contributions to furthering bluegrass music in New England will be presented with 2009 BBU Heritage Awards during the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival presented by the Boston Bluegrass Union over Presidents Day Weekend, February 13-15, at the Sheraton Framingham in Framingham, Massachusetts.

Bluegrass Artists Showcase Their Talents During APAP Conference
Bluegrass music may have been a very small part of the recent Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) Conference in New York City, but the few artist showcases were top-notch. Showcasing artists included veterans Rhonda Vincent and Claire Lynch and relative newcomers The Lovell Sisters and Bearfoot.

Dailey & Vincent Visit A Prairie Home Companion, Feb. 7
Dailey & Vincent, the 2008 Entertainers of the Year in the International Bluegrass Music Awards, will appear on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m. CST. They are musical guests for a live broadcast performance that emanates from the show’s home base, the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota. Several million people tune in to the popular radio variety show each week when it airs on nearly 600 public radio stations in the U.S., as well as on America One abroad and the Armed Forces Networks in Europe and the Far East.

Winners Named in 8th Annual Independent Music Awards
Winners in the eighth annual Independent Music Awards were announced this month. Produced by Music Resource Group, publishers of The Musician’s Atlas, the Independent Music Awards feature more than 50 music and design categories and were open to any indie-label release or self-produced, self-distributed recording released between July 1, 2007 and Sept. 30, 2008.

Chris Austin Songwriting Contest Entries Due Feb. 18
Submissions are now being sought for the 17th annual Chris Austin Songwriting Contest, hosted by MerleFest. Open to aspiring songwriters, who derive no more than 50% of their income from songwriting or music publishing, the contest deadline is February 18.
Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale chairs a volunteer panel of Nashville songwriters, publishers and other music industry professionals, who will judge entries based on originality, lyrics, melody and overall commercial potential.

Multimedia Celebration of Acoustic Music Continues in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania Movie Theaters
Westchester County, New York-based contemporary folk singer-songwriters and musicians Kelly Flint, Susan Kane and The YaYas perform on Wednesday evenings in January as part of an ongoing multimedia celebration of acoustic music known as “WoodSongs at the Movies.” In addition to Clearview’s Bronxville Cinemas, the series also takes place at theaters in Babylon, New York; Montclair and Hackettstown, New Jersey; and Wayne, Pennsylvania.

“Woody’s Children” Turns 40; “The Session” Ends Nine-Year Run
“Woody’s Children,” Bob Sherman’s folk radio program that airs Sundry afternoon from 4-5 p.m. on WFUV in New York, marks its 40th anniversary in January, while “The Session,” an hour-long Celtic music program that Ron Olesko hosted from the studios of WFDU in New Jersey, bowed out Jan. 2 after a nine-year run.
